Intermechanism 5.1 OMCTOn November 12 and 13, 2014, the first part of the fifth “inter-mechanism” meeting took place between Paris and Geneva, hosted by the International Organisation of “La Francophonie” (OIF) and facilitated by the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders. The aim of the event was to enhance a deeper cooperation between different actors regarding many issues related to the context of HRDs’ protection.

The first inter-mechanism meeting took place in Brussels in 2008 when the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), took the initiative to gather for the first time all the human rights defenders’ institutional mandate-holders. Since that time, the Observatory organize the inter-mechanism event almost every year.

The 5.1 meeting was attended by representatives from several NGOs, the United Nations (UN), the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, the OSCE/ODIHR, and the European Union. At the event participated also the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders Michel Forst who met representatives of regional human rights defenders’ mechanisms.

According to the press release, the second part of this event -a 5.2 meeting- will take place during the first quarter of 2015, and it will be again hosted by the OIF headquarters.
